Title: On the Feeding and Care of CubeSats: Lessons Learned from Two University CubeSat Projects

Miniaturized spacecraft, especially CubeSats, have become popular and highly successful platforms for a variety of scientific space missions. The rapid development times of such spacecraft have enabled countless scientific experiments and science verification missions which were infeasible in the past. CubeSats nowadays can be developed at a low budget and relatively easily, combining excellent education possibilities through student involvement with cutting edge science being conducted in the space environment. However, nanosatellite development is non-trivial, and many first-time Nanosatellite developers face a sea of decisions for very specific issues with often seemingly vague consequences. In this talk, some of the experience obtained the-hard-way in two academic nanosatellite missions, FirstMOVE (launched in 2014) and MOVE-II (scheduled in early 2018), will be presented. Based upon the evolution of these two satellite projects over the course of almost 10 years, unexpected pitfalls, technological as well as technical challenges, and possibilities will be discussed.
